Brothers With Beats a Sold-Out Success
Brothers With Beats, the first musical production by Edna Brewer students in the AAMA (African American Male Achievement Program), happened on February 5, 2013 at Yoshi’s Oakland. Our second Black History Month celebration, the event was a success, sold out, as students from various High Schools and Middle Schools came together for a night of music, culture, and fun. My students had worked for 5 months to put together an original piece of music and made their own drums. They learned teamwork, syncopation, and cooperation, and were featured in the East Bay Express. Salute to these young Brothers.

Brewer Students and Alumni Attend Bassoon Clinic
These six amazing musicians spent two hours on Friday, February 22nd, at a bassoon master class with the legendary Paul Hanson. They learned about techniques and the music business from this unique musician’s perspective from performing with Cirque du Soleil for the last 7 years. Sam Berris, Maddie Olmsted, and Jessica Gagliardi are Brewer alumni attending Oakland Tech and all started playing bassoon at Brewer. Finn Johnston, Noah Hayes, and Nonnie Comer are all current Brewer musicians.

Help EBMS Become a Ride for a Reason Beneficiary
Dear Panther Parents: Here’s a note from 6th Grade Pilot teacher Ms. Maiuri about Ride for a Reason. Do we have any cyclists out there who want to help her out with this one? Please see below.

     Hello All,
For those who don’t know me, my name is Jana Maiuri and I’m the Pilot (6th) ELA teacher and the school Wellness Coordinator.
I participated in Ride for a Reason last year and it was well supported, flat, and FUN. Mike Napolitano, one of the organizers, contacted me recently to say they would be interested in adding Brewer as a beneficiary school for next year. This is a great opportunity for Brewer to get involved, have fun, and raise some much-needed funds for our Oakland Public Schools.
     What this would take:
     • A small, dedicated committee to meet with the current organizers and take this on for our school. This would mean organizing volunteers, getting the word out, and of course encouraging as many people as possible to ride and sponsor riders. Maybe 2-5 parents and a teacher or two (I’m in, of course). Basically, we’d meet with Mike and the other organizers about how we could get involved this year, and then next year we could be one of the official schools.
Please email me if you would like to be a part of bringing this great event to Brewer. Mike would like to meet with a committee fairly soon.

OUSD Bands at Oakland A’s, Saturday, June 1
Hi 8th Grade Band Families and all EBMS Families,
You might have heard by now from our excited musicians that we will be performing the National Anthem for the Oakland A’s on Saturday, June 1st. The game that day will be at 1:05 PM against the White Sox. I understand there will be a sound check earlier that morning. As we work out details, we’ll send you updates. The band performing will be an All-Star group from Brewer, Bret Harte, and Westlake. There will be more info soon about ordering tickets for this game. We hope all our band families, and the entire Brewer community, will join us for this exciting event.

We’ve once again secured Woodminster Amphitheater for our 8th grade promotion ceremonies. Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 13, 2013. For the second year in a row, we won’t have to restrict attendees, and all participating students can celebrate this important event with their families. We’ll send more updates as they become available, including the time of the promotion ceremony. Thank you Lisa Terrazas for coordinating this!
