Food Drive

In the spirit of the Holiday season, the 8th Grade leadership class is  putting on a short, but well-needed food drive to help support the Alameda Country Food bank. Starting on Friday, December9th, and ending the following Friday, December 16th, we would like to have a grade-level challenge. Leadership students will come around to count the total amount of cans/dry food items in your grade’s barrel, which will then be reported the following day over the announcements.

Everyone – be a model to students and bring in items of your own to contribute to remind them that you are part of the community as well.

1 out of every 6 people in Alameda County uses the food bank during the course of a year. This is a great opportunity to help build community both inside and outside of Brewer, but we need the help of our amazing staff and students to make this work. Please email me with any questions, concerns, feedback, or idea’s that you would like to contribute.

Thank you,

Mr. Minhondo .  email address dashkira@gmail.com

Race to Nowhere at Grand Lake

Nowhere” at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater!

** About the Film **

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have
been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that
students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to
do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in
our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged,
stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people

arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to
challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to
become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

In a grassroots sensation already feeding a groundswell for change, hundreds of
theaters, schools and organizations nationwide are hosting community screenings
during a six month campaign to screen the film nationwide. Tens of thousands of
people are coming together, using the film as the centerpiece for raising
awareness, radically changing the national dialogue on education and
galvanizing change.

Featured in the film:

* Dr. Madeline Levine, Clinical Psychologist and author of the best-seller, The
Price of Privilege

* Dr. Wendy Mogel, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Blessing of a
Skinned Knee

* Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, Adolescent Medicine Specialist, The Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia

* Dr. Deborah Stipek, Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University

* Dr. Denise Pope, Co-Founder, Challenge Success, Stanford University

* Sara Bennett, Founder, Stop Homework

* [Plus students and teachers, including some from Oakland Tech]

PACT Class

Every Wednesday all of our students have PACT class first
thing in the morning. The most important part of PACT class is the progress
report.

Every student at Edna Brewer must do 2 things with the
progress report:

- Share it with a guardian at home. That guardian must
sign the report showing that they have discussed the grades with the child. The
student must return it to the PACT teacher.

- Set goals. The progress report will have small weekly
goals that have been set by the student. The student must get teacher
signatures to show that they have reached the goals. Each PACT class has
different requirements for how many goals they have to have reach each week.

Many of our students are not doing well in PACT class because
they aren’t returning progress reports with guardian signatures and goals
reached.

PLEASE help your student be successful in PACT by asking
to see the progress report every Wednesday, signing it, and reminding your
child to return it to the teacher.

Being able to monitoring academic progress as a student
will help them be successful in high school and beyond.

Please contact me if you have any question about progress
reports or PACT class.

Thanks for your help!
