** About the Film **

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have
been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that
students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to
do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in
our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged,
stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people

arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to
challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to
become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

In a grassroots sensation already feeding a groundswell for change, hundreds of
theaters, schools and organizations nationwide are hosting community screenings
during a six month campaign to screen the film nationwide. Tens of thousands of
people are coming together, using the film as the centerpiece for raising
awareness, radically changing the national dialogue on education and
galvanizing change.

November PTSA Meeting

Please Join Us for Brewer’s First Ever High School Panel

We’re honored to have Principal Andujar from Oakland
Tech, Principal Romero from Oakland High, and Vice Principal Marisol Arkin from
Skyline High at our next PTSA meeting to discuss their programs and answer your
questions. We’ll start things off with a brief report from Principal Pasarow on
the latest school news and also hear from PTSA leaders about open positions.
We’ll move quickly so that we can spend the
majority of our time hearing from our guest speakers. Brewer’s own 8th
grade Assistant Principal Claire Fisher and School Counselor Alice Philips will
also speak about what we’re doing at Brewer to make sure our kids are ready for
a successful transition to high school. We hope that you will join us for this
second general association meeting of the year on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00
PM in the Panther Playhouse. To submit your questions for Principal Andujar,
Principal Romero, and Vice Principal
Arkin prior to the meeting, please email Lisa Young and Sharon Lipping

Morning tours for prospective parents of incoming students take place on the dates listed below. Each tour will visit the 6th grade classrooms, as well as the main areas of the school, and conclude with a Q&A session. All tours will begin at 9 a.m. in the school Library and are limited to 48 people. Tours last about one and a half hours. The tour dates are as follows:

  • Friday, October 21, 2011
  • Thursday, November 10, 2011
  • Thursday, December 15, 2011
  • Friday, January 6, 2012

To reserve a space on a tour, please sign up here and be sure to RSVP for the total number in your group.

In addition to the morning tours, an evening Open House will be held on Thursday, December 1st  beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the principal and school staff, learn more about academics and activities at the school, and hear how the PTSA is helping Edna Brewer excel as an outstanding public middle school.

While tours are intended primarily for incoming 6th grade families, if your child will be entering EBMS in 7th or 8th grade, you are also welcome to attend the Open House or join a tour. On the day of the tour, please let the parent coordinator know the grade level in which you are interested and they will try to accommodate a visit to that grade level.

OUSD Enrollment Options

The School Options Open Enrollment Program requires all students to submit an application to attend a school in the fall, even if it is their neighborhood school. Mix It Up Day!

Our Mix It Up Day, Oct. 19th, went great! We came up with something that really worked! The teachers requested that we do it again at the end of every marking period. We have 800 students and previously had a hard time enforcing mingling at lunch. So, this year we mixed it up during our once a week PACT (Advisory) class. We had half of every class switch with a different grade level. They joined in icebreaker activities that were suggested on the TeachingTolerance.org website. Student reaction: Evontee Johnson 7th grader said, “It was cool! We got to work with 8th graders and I never got to do that at my old school! I only saw them passing through the hallways.” Julissa Molina-Vega 8th grader said, “We learned about where everyone was from and talked about the differences in our cultures. It was fun!” Teacher reaction: History teacher Mr. Kirschbaum said, “It was definitely a success and I think we should discuss doing it to build a community once a marking period.” Science teacher Ms. Goldstein said, “It was wonderful, my 6th graders were in awe, and the 7th graders were definitely excited to be role models. I hope we can do this frequently!”

Day of Action

There will be a local Day of Action on Wednesday, March 2nd.  Schools will hold Disaster Drills, as they did last spring, to dramatize the disaster of these cuts for our schools.  After school, there will be a rally at the State Building (1515 Clay St)  beginning  at 3:00pm highlighting our opposition to budget cuts followed by a press conference at 4:00pm. At 4:30 there will be a forum (indoors) about the OUSD budget.  Tech will be participating in the Disaster Drill, and parent participation would be great.  Everyone is invited to the downtown events in the afternoon.
