** About the Film **

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have
been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that
students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to
do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in
our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged,
stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people

arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to
challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to
become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

In a grassroots sensation already feeding a groundswell for change, hundreds of
theaters, schools and organizations nationwide are hosting community screenings
during a six month campaign to screen the film nationwide. Tens of thousands of
people are coming together, using the film as the centerpiece for raising
awareness, radically changing the national dialogue on education and
galvanizing change.

Featured in the film:

* Dr. Madeline Levine, Clinical Psychologist and author of the best-seller, The
Price of Privilege

* Dr. Wendy Mogel, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Blessing of a
Skinned Knee

* Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, Adolescent Medicine Specialist, The Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia

* Dr. Deborah Stipek, Dean of the School of Education at Stanford University

Volunteers needed

Volunteers needed to help
with upcoming school tours.

They’re coming:  parents of 5th
graders looking to decide which middle school their child should attend
(remember when that was you?!)  We have an awesome middle school to share,
and Parent Tours are scheduled for Nov. 10th, Dec. 15th,
and Jan. 6th from 9:00 – 11:00am.  We are looking for current
EBMS parents to help lead small groups of visitors around the school on those
days.  You can help with one tour or come to all of them, whatever you can
fit into your schedule.  Please e-mail tours@ednabrewer.net
if you are interested in helping.  Also, you can join the Outreach/Tours
committee at our next meeting on Friday, November 18th at 10am in
the Library and help us plan and host school tours and outreach events.
Thank you!

Each tour will visit the 6th grade classrooms, as well as the main areas of the school, and conclude with a Q&A session. All tours will begin at 9 a.m. in the school Library and are limited to 48 people. Tours last about one and a half hours. The tour dates are as follows:

  • Friday, October 21, 2011
  • Thursday, November 10, 2011
  • Thursday, December 15, 2011
  • Friday, January 6, 2012

In addition to the morning tours, an evening Open House will be held on Thursday, December 1st  beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Parents will have the opportunity to meet the principal and school staff, learn more about academics and activities at the school, and hear how the PTSA is helping Edna Brewer excel as an outstanding public middle school.

While tours are intended primarily for incoming 6th grade families, if your child will be entering EBMS in 7th or 8th grade, you are also welcome to attend the Open House or join a tour. On the day of the tour, please let the parent coordinator know the grade level in which you are interested and they will try to accommodate a visit to that grade level.

OUSD Enrollment Options

The School Options Open Enrollment Program requires all students to submit an application to attend a school in the fall, even if it is their neighborhood school. The open enrollment period begins in early December and usually ends in mid-January. Check the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) website www.ousd.k12.ca.us, for specific dates for the coming year. Edna Brewer Middle School does not admit students at our school site. All admission requests and questions should be directed to the OUSD Student Assignment Office (510-434-7790). They are located at 2111 International Blvd., Oakland 94606.

Semester Grades!

I’ve added your unit test scores to TeacherEase, and have submitted your final grades for the marking period and semester.  You will probably receive your report cards in a week or so.

For science, most students will receive exactly the final grade listed on TeacherEase.  If you can’t wait, feel free to email me and I can tell you what final grades I submitted for you and possibly what final grades other teachers have submitted for you as well.

School resumes January 3, 2011

School resumes on January 3, 2011, same time, same place.
