Edna Brewer is glad to welcome our new full-time art teacher!
Thank you, Denise Limon for the photos!
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today saluted the innovative science instruction taking place at Edna Brewer Middle School—instruction that will be coming to all of California’s public schools as a result of recent efforts to dramatically enhance and modernize science education.
“As a former science teacher, I couldn’t be more excited by the learning I saw today in Jeri Johnstone’s eighth grade integrated science class,” Torlakson said. “It’s hands-on, interactive, and collaborative. Students and teachers ask lots of questions and work like scientists. These are the kinds of skills needed for success in high school, college and the modern workplace.” [Read more…]
Thank you to over 30 Brewer Community crafters for being a part of our first Holiday Craft Fair!
Thanks also to Kathy Stokes for leading us in a Community Art project, continuing Tuesdays at lunch in the library and to the cheer team and student musicians!
Most of all, thank you to Suzanne Riley for making it all happen! (Photos: Suzanne Riley)
Thank you, Ms. Philips, for organizing our annual Culture Night Dinner:
We celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, learned some new dances, enjoyed the steel drum music of Flash n’ the Kettican Reggae Vibes and viewed student art displays.
Thank you to everyone who brought food and attended despite dinner conflicting with the last game of the World Series!
We had a record Burgers N’ Bingo turnout this year!
We’d like to extend a very special thank you to:
- Charlene Johnson and Heather McGrew for organizing this fun community event!
- the Edna Brewer Community for a record turnout and a fantastic assortment of prizes and desserts
- Mr. Pitt-Smith and the Brewer Jazz Band!
- Eric Londgren for the outstanding photos (Click here for the complete slideshow. Password: bingo2016)
- Everyone who helped the night of the event
It was great to see the kids having some good old-fashioned Bingo fun!
The New Student Picnic was a big success thanks to the many families who participated and to Paula Larsen-Moore, Eric Longren, Diana Brown, Roger Moore, Cindy Oludayo, and the many who brought food and pitched in to clean up.

Career Day was a big success thanks to the awesome volunteers from the Brewer community and beyond! A big shout-out to Ms. Philips for organizing this every year!
We would love to hear from current or former students about the impact Career Day had on them.
Here’s what Career Day volunteers had to say:
“We were so impressed with the students and teachers alike. I was mostly impressed with students’ existing knowledge of writing code through organizations like code.org and blackgirlscode.com. What a bright future!”
“Wonderful celebration and exploration of many careers for our next generation of leaders…this is an amazing middle school… Love being a volunteer with the Visual Arts Program… thanks Alice Phillips”
